No more fights for Nepal’s first Presidency

Following the historic declaration of the Constituent Assembly to abolish 240 years old Monarchy, Nepal entered into the new phase of its history. Never in the history of Nepal, it remained without Kings. Now, the vacuum has been created. Though the Ceremonial President is to fill that vacuum, yet no body is seen acceptable to all. a
Girija Prasad Koirala, incumbent Prime Minister is very much destined to become Nepal’s first President. His lust for power has exceeded limit. Prime Minister GP Koirala has changed his earlier nationwide self-proclamation that he will resign immediately after the Constituent Assembly polls. However, keeping word is not in GP Koirala’s dictionary. A liar like him should not be in the position to change 240 years old institution of Monarchy. Besides, GP Koirala’s past records of his involvement in corruptions like that of Dhamija Scandal, Lauda case, Arun III hydro project, dissolving parliament before its five year terms and seeking permission from late King Birendra to use Royal Nepal Army against the Maoists and the innocent people- all show GP Koirala is completely unfit to be the first President of Nepal.
Another aspirant, Madhav Kumar Nepal also resembles GP Koirala. He is no less opportunist than the the incumbent Prime Minister Koirala. Madhav Nepal has proved how much greed he has for the power. While his mother was breathing her last, Madhav Nepal was pressing his Daura Suruwal, Nepali national dress thinking he needs it any moment the deposed King Gyanendra calls him to take the charge of Prime Minister. What a shame? This guy’s elevation to the first Presidency of Nepal will be insult to the whole world. It will be an insult to the motherhood.
The leader of Madesh Janaadhikar Forum (MJF), Upendra Yadav has floated an idea that could be acceptable to all. His idea to elevate any apolitical person to Nepal’s First President must be appreciated. Likewise, the Maoist supremo Prachanda’s indication to leave Presidency to the civil society is impressive. His sacrifice must be appreciated, too. Now, it seems Prachanda is exhibiting statesmanship. When Prachanda is ready to sacrifice his rightful claim to be the President of Nepal, lesson must be learned by Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala and step down without a single minute delay and let Maoist leader to form the all powerful government.
Among apolitical personality, as Nepali intellectual have started saying that Dr. Sunduk Ruit, an eye specialist or Dr. Kul Chandra Gautam, former UNICEF Deputy Executive Director are best for the position. Nepal at present needs international recognition as the newest Republic. Its survival is at stake. At every nooks of the Kathmandu street, people’s words are heard that Monarch can stage a comeback. Even if the former King does not intend to do that, Nepal’s ambitious and uncertain military personnel are there to create a big hurdle. Thus, Nepal needs President at the earliest who can garner support from the international community as well as from the United Nations to its newly established Republic status. Thus, Dr. Kul Chandra Gautam could fit into this paradigm. Dr. Kul Gautam has no political ambition and has maintained his clean image in the international service career. He could be acceptable even to civil society leaders.
There are so many instances that the former international civil service managers have managed their respective duties very efficiently. Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Moeen A.Qureshi has exhibited his excellence during the interim rule. He was senior Vice President of the World Bank. India’s current Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh had spent a few years in the World Bank as its economist. Dr. Kul Gautam is no less popular in the international community’s circle. He can easily garner support from the international community for the Newest Republic of Nepal. Besides, the national government under the leadership of Maoist supremo will have no threat for easy functioning. Otherwise, Constitutional making process will be delayed which runs contrary to the people’s hope. Thus, no more fight is expected for Nepal’s first Presidency.

Nepal has entered a new era of peace, prosperity and genuine democracy following the historic elections to the Constituent Assembly.
The very first meeting of the Constituent Assembly has declared Nepal a Federal Democratic Republic.
To ensure peace, tranquility and good governance, while the new Constitution is being drafted, the CA has agreed to entrust the executive powers to a government led by the largest political party emerging from the election, based on consensus among key parties represented in the CA.
At the same time it has created a position of Ceremonial President of Nepal who will be a respected national figure exercising the largely ceremonial functions of Head of State.
A consensus is emerging that the first President of Nepal during this critical transition period should preferably be someone who is a non-partisan, neutral but highly respected personality with strong commitment to peace, democracy, human rights and development.
Kul Chandra Gautam embodies all of these characteristics, and other unique qualities, which make him an ideal candidate to become the first President of Nepal:
